Credit River History - The Majestic Credit River

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ukf5... to watch this beautiful video by Heritage Mississauga and Sanborg Productions.

It all started here. This fast moving river, oh the stories it could tell. On its banks, anglers compete for steelhead, families enjoy picnics and children play. Flowing for 1,070 kilometres from the headwaters above the Niagara Escarpment to Port Credit at Lake Ontario, this is the majestic Credit River. Home to a wide range of wildlife, it’s an ecological wonderland. It’s also one of the most important rivers in Southern Ontario with a 10,000 year heritage. At first glance, it’s hard to imagine the incredible history it holds. And how it played such a valuable role in bringing commerce to this area.
The Ojibwa called it “Missinnihe” or “trusting creek” based on the trading relationship between Native and European peoples. The Credit River was named by a French fur trader around 1668 to honor this trustworthy exchange. At one time major milling complexes stretched along its banks. The stonehooking, fishing and transportation industries prospered. Today it’s a place where family activities and community festivals abound. Conservation of its water and shores is an ongoing task, improving its fishery and wildlife habitats. So while life along the river has changed, for the people who live in Mississauga, it’s a place of tremendous exploration and joy.
