DanceWorks presents provocative premiere from Hari Krishnan of inDANCE

DanceWorks presents a provocative world premiere from
Toronto's acclaimed inDANCE
 Holy Cow(s)!
Choreographed by Hari Krishnan
March 23-25 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre

TORONTO (February 10, 2017) - DanceWorks, Toronto's longest running contemporary dance series, proudly presents cutting-edge Toronto dance company inDANCE with the world premiere of Holy Cow(s)!, choreographed by Artistic Director Hari Krishnan. Holy Cow(s)! runs Thursday March 23 through Saturday March 25 at 8pm nightly at Harbourfront Centre Theatre as part of the NextSteps series. Tickets are now on sale.

A subversive and physically complex full-length dance production, Holy Cow(s)! runs rampant, toppling South Asian-dance related taboos of gender, identity, sexuality and cultural (mis)appropriation - provoking desire and derision through humor and eroticism.

A highly personal work from Hari Krishnan that turns South Asian dance on its head, Holy Cow(s)! is a deep reflection on his thoughts about consumerism, dance as a product for public consumption, 'east-west' superficial binaries and a deliberation on how his identity as an artist has had to fit into specific pre-determined categories. The eclectic dance vocabulary - drawn from Asian dance traditions to contemporary western dance sensibilities - oscillates back and forth between solos, duets, trios and ensembles, all performed to a commissioned world music score by Niraj Chag (London, U.K.).

This provocative dance performance also features solos choreographed by Sean Curran (New York City), David Brick (Philadelphia) and Jay Hirabayashi (Vancouver). Other collaborators include lighting designer Jack Caar (Connecticut) and costume/visual designer Rex (Toronto).

Holy Cow(s)! is performed by seven talented Toronto dance artists: Paul Charbonneau, Beth Despres, Peter Hessel, Roney Lewis, Megan Nadain, Vinod Para and Xi Yi.

Toronto's NOW Magazine featured Krishnan as one of the top ten artists to watch out for this winter - https://nowtoronto.com/stage/10-artists-to-watch-this-winter/ . And the Toronto Star noted previously that "Krishnan is happy to scoff at tradition, turn things upside down and shake out all the cobwebs."

inDANCE is a progressive Canadian dance company. It presents works that are a potent, distilled synthesis of artistic director Hari Krishnan's Eastern and Western artistic and aesthetic personae.  Acknowledging the burdens and legacies of tradition, inDANCE disrupts and investigates post-modern evolutions, driving the company's arc on a trajectory that absorbs influences from the West into its strident idiom of contemporary Asian cultures. The company pioneers work that is controversial, unconventional and radical, producing eclectic, sensual and virtuosic dance that confronts dominant discourses on global culture. inDANCE's work is presented at prestigious venues around the world. Recent works include Tiger by the Tail (2016), The Book of Sandalwood (2015) and Skin (2014),
